Present simple
We use present simple for daily routines or habits (I get up at 6:00) and for permanent states (My mom lives in Paris).
The spelling 3rd person singular is diferent because most verbs take -S in the final part of the verb but there are some rules:
Verbs ending in -SS, .SH, -CH, -X, and -O, take -ES. (I miss- He misses; I fix-She fixes)
Verbs that end in consonant + -y, drop the -y and take -ies. (I try- She tries)
Verbs ending in vowel + -y take -s only. (I play- He plays)
Present continuous
We use present continuous for actions that are happening now, while we are speaking (He's listening to music now) and for actions around the moment of speaking (Sandra is studying hard this morning).
To add the ing we have some rules too:
Verbs ending in -e drop the -e and add -ing (Take-Takes)
Verbs ending in a stressed vowel between two consonant double the consonant and add -ing ( Shop- Shopping)
Verbs ending in -l double the -l and add -ing (Travel- Travelling)
Verbs ending in -ie drop the -ie and add -y + -ing (Tie- Tying)
Let´s look at some example
I'm sitting here in the boring room
I'm wasting my time
I'm hanging around
I'm waiting for you
I'm driving too fast
I'm driving around in my car
I'm driving too far
I'm turning my head up and dow
I'm sitting here
I´m stepping around in the desert
